Hitbox invincibility is the typical method of handling invincibility in 2D fighters. It is achieved by making certain parts of your character's hitbox invincible for a certain amount of frames.
For example, in every Street Fighter game, you can uppercut through projectiles (if your uppercut has invincibility) and in Guilty Gear, most characters can 6P through projectiles.
In Super Turbo: HD Remix, you can view the hitboxes of every move in the game, including where and when they are invincible.
