« PAX: Mortal Kombat Gameplay Videos and Hands-on impressions »
A slew of new Mortal Kombat videos surfaced today from PAX, though most of them are shaky cam footage and truthfully it's hard to make out what is going on. That said, one video made it out in one piece that gives a clear look at the new Mortal Kombat. You can check out the others over at SRK.
Though the graphics are certainly impressive, it appears there are some goofy hit boxes in the game. If you check out some of the ranges on the sweeps the actual hit box seems to go much further than the model of the characters. Also, once the characters are up close and fighting the pace of the game seems fairly quick, but from long range, a lot of attacks look somewhat slow to me. Keep in mind, this game is in development, and even with Street Fighter 4 it took months of players figuring out attack patterns for the pace of the game to pick up.
Anyway, I haven't played it of course and this is just some input from watching a few videos. A lot of the feedback from PAX is really positive. Bart Robson over at Thunderbolt chimes in with his thoughts on the game and here is a small segment of what he has to say about it:
The new Mortal Kombat is a great mix of old-school and modern fighting game conventions. Ditching last generation’s style of 3D fighting, this new game returns to the classic 2D field of play, and the art direction is nigh-on perfectly in sync with the old games, sans digitized pictures of actors. Still, from far away, this fighter looks exactly like an HD arcade classic.
Gone, though, are Mortal Kombat’s crazy long input strings. This version more closely resembles Street Fighter and BlazBlue, as far as control goes. Most actions require one input, usually some form of direction and an attack button. This goes for Fatality moves too, which in my case (playing as Sub Zero) meant pressing RB and RT. That seems like a simple command for the brutal cutscene that followed, but I still felt pretty badass.
The guys over at ScrewAttack also put together a small clip with their impressions of the game. Check it out below.
