« PRICE INCREASE FOR JAPANESE ARCADE GAMES »

SIGN REFLECTING THE PRICE INCREASEOichi from NeoGAF posted some photos and information about Japanese arcade games receiving a price increase at certain arcades. He mentions most games are going from 100 yen to 120 yen per play, or about a buck-fifty in US dollars. Although bad news for those who play in Japan, this still doesn't make me feel any better about paying 75 cents to play Street Fighter IV here in San Francisco!

Now, I don't know the reason for the price increase, and I'm sure people are going to say it's because of the economic situation that's affecting all countries right now, but who knows exactly what the reason is. Still, it is disappointing to hear that this is happening, since most arcades are already charging 100yen/play. Thank god for the 50yen/play arcades that are still around.

Anyway, Taito Station in Shibuya has recently increased the prices on all of their games. This includes sitdown games (fighters, Gundam, etc.), gun games, medal games, and everything in between. Games that were 100yen to play are now 120yen, and those that were 200yen to play are now 240yen (wtf). However, the kids card games (Dragonball, Naruto, Dragon Quest, etc.) still remain at 100yen.

Now that the price change is in effect, money exchange machines now spit out 10yen coins as well as the 100yen coins. I'm really, really hoping this trend doesn't continue anywhere else because it really sucks, especially since 100yen is already bloody expensive to play at the arcades.
