« 1UP's Mortal Kombat Review by Haunts »
If you need a little help deciding whether or not to grab a copy of Mortal Kombat, our very own Haunts reviewed the title for 1UP and said review is now live over on their site. The review goes into pretty big detail on what you can expect out of the game, what works and what doesn't. Check the excerpt below and then head over to 1UP to read the full thing!
While I never got into the series too heavily past Mortal Kombat II, all of the classic attacks are just as I remember them from the older games. Scorpion's Spear followed up with an Uppercut; or a series of jab attacks on a blocking opponent then catching them off guard with a Sweep. These are the kind of low level tactics we used to employ back in the day at the arcades, all in the hopes of eventually getting to, well, "FINISH HIM."
Fighting games have evolved quite a bit since the days of pumping quarters into the arcade machine though, and now even casual fighting game fans expect a lot when it comes to the gameplay mechanics. So while spamming Uppercuts in the hopes to see Dan "Toasty" Forden pop-up on the screen is great for nostalgia, it will only hold your interest for so long. Thankfully, Mortal Kombat's gameplay stacks up pretty well to the competition, though it still has some flaws.
