« NetherRealm Studios Relocating Mortal Kombat 9 Online Service From GameSpy Servers  »

The latest Mortal Kombat will be moving to a new online service as a response to the upcoming closure of servers on GameSpy.

Developer NetherRealm Studios is in the progress of transitioning Mortal Kombat 9 from the GameSpy platform, the game's original multiplayer service. According to the official Mortal Kombat Facebook page, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC MK9 players "may experience an interruption of online play and matchmaking and we ask for your patience during this time." The PlayStation Vita version after May 31, 2014 will only have multiplayer through an ad-hoc network.

This decision came following the announcement on April 2014 in which GameSpy owner Glu Mobile will terminate all legacy servers on May 31, 2014. Publishers and developers also have committed to migrating some of their own games to newer services. Another fighting game that featured the GameSpy platform was the PS3 version Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition; It was later removed in the latest major update.
