« Daigo Umehara Donates Capcom Cup Money to Evo Scholarship »

image courtesy of Mad CatzA ferocious competitor within the game, the man known as "The Beast" has shown his caring and generosity by offering the money he earned at Capcom Cup to the Evo Scholarship.

In a letter written to Shoryuken, the Mad Catz-sponsored legend explained that he owed the experiences of his "professional gamer" life to the community and that he wanted to give something back to the FGC. "Just as you need an opponent in fighting game, the community is equally important to me," Daigo said, also adding that he hopes the money donated will "help the community thrive further."

Daigo's donation will add roughly $60,000 to the Evo Scholarship fund, which is used to help community members receive an education in game development at the NYU Gamer Center. The Center said in a statement that Daigo's gift "indicates that the qualities that make him such a great competitor extend far beyond the game," and that "having a heart big enough to donate all of his winnings is actually an indication of what it takes to win in the first place."

With such a large influx of funds, NYU has moved the application date for the 2016 scholarship back to January 15, 2016. For the complete statements by Daigo and the NYU Game Center, head over to Shoryuken.
