Today's article from Karst covers Dormammu's vast array of options when at full screen away. Karst goes into pretty great detail on each of Dormammu's options, highlighting their strengths and ideal use in a match. Enjoy!
Introduction:
When the opponent is full-screen, his journey to get in close to Dormammu is long and fraught with peril. What Dormammu player does not possess a fiendish grin upon forcing his opponent to a corner of the screen to cower before the full arsenal of the Dread Lord? We love this sense of control over the screen. This is what draws us to Dormammu. No other character boasts the ability to threaten you in a variety of ways from any position on the screen while remaining absent of movement.
The journey from full screen to reach Dormammu is laden with pillars, holes and bolts of energy until the final threshold is reached, where before your foe lays a mocking carpet of fire. Here I offer my experiences in making that journey an unsuccessful one for my opponent. May you gain from it.
When at full screen, all of the following abilities are worthy of consideration. Click links on table of contents below:
-Dark Matter
-Flame Carpet
-Dark Hole
-Purification
-Dark Spells
-Liberation
-Mass Change
-Chaotic Flame
-Stalking Flare
-Dark Dimension
-Cancelling Normals to Snuff Projectiles
This is absent consideration of universal options, such as dashing in or superjumping! Every ability on this list has situational merit, and the best option in every situation is a combination of knowledge about your opponent's playstyle, his character(s), your meter availability, your opponent's goals, and what your immediate threats are.
In Closing:
Experiment! Every few days, I sit down and try a new approach with Dormammu. For example, I look to spend a full day abstaining from Dark Matter, Dark Hole, and Purification outside of combo utility entirely. I will stick to Flame Carpet, Dark Spells, and rushing, and I may just find a new way to play my favorite character. Fiddle around with your different options, and don't be afraid to forego a full-screen attack in favor of a Dark Spell or two now and then! The sacrificed chip damage is often very worth your newfound Liberation. Make your opponent wish he had stayed cowering in the corner.
