KING OF FIGHTERS XII: NEW IMAGES & VIDEO

Gaming site JEUXACTU posted over 200 new King of Fighters XII images from the XBOX360 version of the game showcasing much of the cast mid-special move. Lots of great screen shots over there but if seeing the game in motion is more your thing then check out the video below. This was posted in #capcom not too long ago and is one of the more impressive videos I've seen so far. The last Kyo combo is...well.. see for yourself!

EXAR KING OF FIGHTERS XII ARCADE STICK UP FOR PRE-ORDER

Still in need of an arcade stick for your PlayStation 3? Well, if you can wait until July, EXAR is releasing two new sticks for the King of Fighters XII and they are both up for pre-order via Play-Asia.com.

There are two versions: one is based on their other sticks like the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom stick with a CAPCOM style 6 button layout, and the other is based on the old school Neo Geo arcade stick with a traditional 4 button SNK layout.

It obviously makes a bit more sense to go with the one with the 6 button layout if you play a lot of fighters, but I'm sure it's safe to say the NeoGeo Stick 2 will be very hard to find as time goes on so you may want to pick one of those babies up for the resale value alone.

KOFXII: ELIZABETH & MATURE COMING TO CONSOLE

So it looks like SNK pulled a fast one on all of us with the K' and Mai art now that a new Famitsu scan has surfaced confirming Elizabeth and Mature are the new additions to the console version of King of Fighters XII (click image to the left for larger version). IGN reported that there could be "over" 22 new characters in the console version so maybe more are on the way, via DLC perhaps?

Details on the console version are far and few between at this point, but its scheduled to release in July so I'm sure we'll have a lot more information on the final version fairly soon.

KING OF FIGHTERS XII: NEW CONSOLE DETAILS & HD VIDEO

IGN posted some details they received from an unnamed Japanese retailer about the home release of King of Fighters XII. Most of the details have been rumored for quite some time or just simply assumed to be included in the game anyway.

Here are the most relevant points:

  • 22 Total characters, two which are hidden (Probably Mai and K')
  • Network play to include lobbies and spectating!

I'm very happy to hear about the lobbies aspect of KOFXII in that it should help in learning a bit more about the game by watching other players play their matches. Now we just have to see if their netcode is comparable to GGPOs.

Also, Arcade Infinity posted some HD KOFXII videos to their YouTube channel showcasing some solid combos and the critical counter system.

Thanks to CYBERFANATIX.com for the heads up on this one.

WIN A KOFXII ARCADE CABINET - KOF BASICS TRAINING VIDEO

Remember that tournament down in LA that is being held for King of Fighters XII? Turns out there is a bit more to it than expected: it's a first come first serve 128 man tournament being organized by the same team that runs EVO - with the chance of winning an actual King of Fighters XII arcade cabinet!

Check out Shoryuken.com for the full details on this. Also, if you haven't registered yet, stop by the official King of Fighters XII website and do so!

Also, while browsing the KOFXII thread on SRK I found this gem of a movie - a training video on KOF basics by Dandy J. Very well done and extremely informative so be sure to study up!

KING OF FIGHTERS XII PLAYABLE IN PORTLAND, OR

According to reports on Shoryuken.com, King of Fighters XII is now playable at a Tilt arcade in Portland, OR. The game is scheduled to drop in Japanese arcades on April, 9th so how this Tilt happened to snag a board is anyone's guess! Not that it matters -- if you're in the area you should go check it out! The game so far looks to be a lot of fun with a very aggressive fast pace to it.

Videos of the game are showing up online thanks to LordBBH's YouTube channel. Check it out:

KING OF FIGHTERS XII OFFICIAL SITE - TOURNAMENT IN LA

The official site for the King of Fighters XII launched earlier this week with screen shots and wallpapers that you can download. Any other info on the game is pretty sparse on the site right now, but there is a section where you can register for updates and a chance to be invited to a KOF tournament in LA.  Since very few people have had time with the game, you might as well register since your chance of winning is just as good as anyone else's at this point!

With the game coming out in the next couple months here I'm sure they will continue to add more to the site so keep an eye on it! I'll be sure to update on any details on the tournament as well.

KING OF FIGHTERS XII: CONSOLE EXCLUSIVE CHARACTERS & ONLINE OPTIONS

A handful of new scans showed up online from Game Informer magazine with some fresh info on the console release of King of Fighters XII. Not only will there be a robust online mode with the ability to spectate and save replays, but it appears console exclusive characters are on the way as well.

This is somewhat surprising considering how many location tests they have held for the game, it seemed they were trying to work out any and all problems with the game before it came out. With console exclusive characters who will most likely receive very little testing, one has to wonder if they will take the SFIV approach and just make the new characters noticeably weaker than the arcade originals.

Anyone want to make bets on who will show up in the console version? I've got $50 on Mai!

Check out more scans and info at CYBERFANATIX.com

KING OF FIGHTERS XII US TRAILER

Some great game play clips in this debut trailer for the North American release of KOFXII, but feels like it's missing some "bounce" in its step for some reason.. Hmmm!

AOU2009 UPDATES: KOFXII VIDEOS, NEW SEGA 2D FIGHTER "PROJECT CERBERUS" AND ARCADE BOARDS

The Japanese arcade expo AOU is going down right now in Japan and news of upcoming projects is being revealed through some sources on Shoryuken.com. Most of it is relating to SEGA with their new 2D Fighter "Project Cerberus" and their new arcade boards, RINGEEDGE and RINGWIDE.

Right now the two arcade boards are powering a new mech game called "Border Break", but who knows if one day it will end up powering Virtua Fighter 6.

A video also showed up for the new 2D fighter from SEGA showcasing a couple matches and characters from the game. Most of the characters look fairly bizarre and honestly the game appears to still need a lot of work at this point.

See for yourself:

On the SNK-Playmore tip, looks like the arcade release for King of Fighter XII is April 09, and no word on a console release yet, although it was at one point slated for May '09. Below are a couple videos of gameplay vs the CPU to hold you over for the time being.

NEW KING OF FIGHTERS XII SCANS

With Street Fighter 4 right around the corner, seems like all other games are being swept under the rug at this point! It's been a while since I've seen any new media for KOFXII but a couple scans showed up on CYBERFANATIX today with some assorted screenshots for the game.

KOFXII & SFIV ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN YOU MAY THINK

Not really from a gameplay perspective, but from a graphical standpoint.  I read online quite a bit these days questions like "Why didn't CAPCOM go full 2D with Street Fighter IV like SNK-Playmore did with King of Fighter XII?". Both games use 3D models, believe it or not, for their visuals.

Fact of the matter is King of Fighters XII uses a technique called "rotoscoping" which essentially means they created 3D models and drew over the models to create a genuine 2D look. Street Fighter IV uses standard 3D models on 2D plane with a stylized look. So yes, King of Fighters XII is hand drawn, but 3D models play a big part in its look and feel.

KING OF FIGHTERS XII LOCATION TEST

I found this on GAMEWATCH a little earlier today. SNK-PLAYMORE posted on their site that there is going to be a KOFXII location test in Osaka on the 20th and 21st of this month. The Premiere Event that went down a week or two ago apparently had the "final version" there so I doubt we will see any new characters but we can always hope. Many people feel that some staple SNK characters are missing but really we may have to wait until the next installment to see more additions to the roster.

KOFXII Premier Event: CRITICAL COUNTER, DUO LON, MATCH VIDEOS

I've been too busy playing Street Fighter IV over the weekend to do a proper update here, but in my absence looks like the KOFXII Premier Event went down over the weekend with out a hitch. Here are a couple links with all the updates:

Dengeki.com posted some new images showing Duo Lon who has been added to the roster earlier this week.

Cyberfanatix.com posted a bunch of new videos and images form the event along with a rundown of the Critical Counter system that is found in the game.

Video showcasing the Critical Counter system thanks to Cyberfanatix YouTube Channel. Check their channel for more match videos from the event.

After reading up on the system, if I understand it correctly you enter a Critical Coutner state when intercepting special moves from mid to close range with a strong or medium (normal?) attack. This allows you to chain together "whatever moves you choose" (custom combos?) or if you time it right perform a Desperation Move (super).

KING OF FIGHTERS XII ROSTER UPDATE

The newest issue of Arcadia Magazine confirms three new additions to the KOFXII roster:

  • Goro Daimon
  • Chin Genstai
  • Sie Kensou

There may be some surprises at the upcoming Premier Event this weekend in Japan (Where is Mai?), but if not, these will be the final additions to the KOFXII roster. They mentioned all characters will be playable and this will more or less be the final version of the game.

Big ups to Reno for the tip on this one. Keep an eye out for images from Arcadia Magazine in the coming days and footage from the event after the weekend!

KING OF FIGHTERS XII PREMIERE EVENT: NOV 29th 2008

According to Cyberfanatix.com there will be a SNK-Playmore hosted event in Japan come the 29th of this month for King of Fighters XII. I'm not sure where the event will be in Japan, but here is the link to the page about the event which has a map that points to the actual location.

Here are the details of the event:

All the characters in The King of Fighters XII will be playable.

The King of Fighters XII's game system will be completed.

The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match also will be playable.

There will be a special tournament for The King of Fighters XII.

So not only will all the characters be playable, but the game system will be complete as well. If this is the case, it looks like SNK is still on course for an April '09 release date.

TGS '08: KOFXII PRODUCER AND VOICE ACTOR INTERVIEW

Cyberfanatix once again comes through with the fresh King of Fighters news. This is a translation of the "talk show" SNK held at the event with the games producer, art director and voice actors.

 What about the updated graphics?
(Nona): At the beginning, we were thinking about making the whole game in 3D, but we decided later to use the 2D Dot in order to respond to our 2D Dot and KOF fans. We then wanted to focus on high resolution characters and living crowded backgrounds.

What about the work on characters?
(Nona): If I do it alone, It would take me about 6 months to finish one single character. We are, currently, drawing with 4 times density , that's why everything is looking looking good so far.
(Ku): We want people to realize the time and effort that we put into the graphics, and pay attention to the muscles and facial expressions. I think they'll probably get the muscle-love fever after that (*laugh*)
Muscle-love fever, huh...? Interesting! Maybe something got lost in translation there.

EDGE MAGAZINE TGS '08 TOP 20: SFIV & KOFXII

EDGE Magazine released their top 20 games of Tokyo Game Show '08 and two fighting games ended up making the cut: Street Fighter IV (9) and King of Fighters XII (4). Over all the article seems a bit rushed: a lot of thoughts all over the place for each game, with no real concrete reason why the games are on the top 20 list to begin with. Either way it's good to see these two games getting more coverage.
