Running It Back: Why Capcom vs SNK 2 is One of the Best Games of All Time

Since the introduction of Street Fighter IV, there seems to be a revival of fighting games along with a new generation of players. This was particularly exciting, because before Street Fighter IV there was absolutely no real interest in the genre and very little games were being made. Many were out of luck in this drought and anyone who still played then had to play the same games that were out during the 90s/early 2000s. These games became long time classics that has earned their place in history

Now there are new games being released everywhere, including King of Fighters XIII and Street Fighter X Tekken, to meet the positive response that Street Fighter IV had. It makes me wonder who would still be interested in these older classic games of the past. I have always held Capcom vs SNK 2 (CvS2) to be one of the greatest fighting games ever made before the drought of fighting games, but have had trouble getting interest across to the newer players.

There are many reasons why it is considered a classic and why I personally still play this game in spite of all the new games that are coming out.

Capcom vs SNK 2 has one of the most diverse and competitive character rosters of all time.

With 48 total characters, one might think that CvS2 is extremely hard to balance and it will fall into Marvel vs Capcom 2's trap where only the strongest survive. However this is a huge misconception, there are many diverse characters that you can choose that are competitive. In this game, High Tiers and many Mid Tiers stand a chance! There are over 20 characters that are not considered top tier and still see high level play. Need some proof?

This set of matches focuses on a diverse group of players and teams that include Yane, Gao, P Rugal, Izumi, and others. Even old time CvS2 player Bea with his known K-Raiden decides to show up. STA S3 Ranbats - Old Peoples Games Sunday! [2-26] CVS2/MVC2

Are you ready for the first dream event of the 21st Century along with some of that Mahvel? This Sunday at Southtown Arcade, they will be hosting Part 2 of their Season 3 ranbats! Just some old geezers playing some old people games. However that doesn't mean we don't welcome new blood! Come over on the 26th to compete!

Back in the early days, it was customary to see both MvC2, and CvS2 together as some of the most hype games to be played. They were almost treated like brothers of sorts, you would not have one without the other.

Unfortunately there will be no 3S ranbat this month. CvS2 will start at 1PM and MvC2 will start at 5PM and the stream will start soon after.

CvS2: KYSG Combo Video

An old time gamer named KYSG decided to make a combo video recently for CvS2. Some of these setups might not be very practical to use in a real match, however they are very interesting nonetheless. I have uploaded a compliation of all of his CvS2 materials onto my Youtube page. Embed Video after the break.

The videos are divided into three parts, starting with Maki's glitched Alpha Counter. Whenever Maki gets struck during her Alpha Counter animation, she will happen to air reel into a jugglable state where just about anything will combo afterwards. This leads to some interesting combos that are otherwise not possible.

The second part of the video focuses on combos that can be performed after landing a meaty hit from behind when the opponent crosses up. The concept comes from the huge frame advantage of certain moves, and the hitbox of that said move that extends to behind your character. Also applicable are moves that extend a character's hitbox forward into the meaty move but doesn't actually hit the other person. This is actually quite applicable to a real match depending on your character's meaty attack and situation (Sagat's c.hp comes to mind as being a common move that applies to this). If you are quick to realize this, you can capitalize into a huge punish!

The third part of the combo video focuses on the low hitstun on Rolento's Steel Rain super, and having it interrupt your combo in order to put you in a position to extend your damage potential.

Again, if you have not already, check out KYSG's Youtube Channel where he performs combo videos on multiple games, including CvS2, 3S, Alpha, and even obscure games like World Heroes!

STA Old People Games Ranbat 3.1 - High Level CVS2 Play From Leezy & More

Yesterday we held the first of our Season 3 ranbats for Old People Games (3s,CVS2 & MVC2) at Southtown Arcade and it was awesome to see everyone still supporting CVS2 so heavily! While 15 players may not sound like a lot, that's still more than I see for some tournaments featuring more modern games. Not bad for a game that is over 10 years old!

I wish I could say the same for 3s and MVC2 but we had a couple round robin tournaments for those that ended up being a blast either way. Come on guys, support your games! You will be judged...next month!

In any event, CVS2 was the star of the show with Phil giving Leezy some serious competition in the grand finals. Everyone agreed this was the most intense CVS2 GF we had seen so far and it is one you wont want to miss either. I wont spoil the outcome but hit the jump for full results and replays!

STA Ranbats S3 - Old People Games This Sunday! (1-29) CVS2/3S/MVC2

Gettin' old, seein things!Don't get me wrong, I looooove our SSF4, UMVC3 and KOFXIII tournaments we run at Southtown Arcade, but there is something special about sitting around with a bunch of geezers just playing some CVS2 or 3S and talking 'bout the "good ole days".

Back in my day we didn't have these live streams, internet forums to hide behind or any of that crap. No sir, all we had was a bunch of games that had no chance in hell of ever receiving a patch, and damnit we played them anyway no matter how broken they were.

CvS2: Kansai Ranbats 12/17/2011

Ibaraki VIP has had annual CvS2 ranbats for quite some time now in Japan for the people that still love this classic game. Held in Kansai, these group of hardcore players had a 2v2 Team Tournament for the last month of 2011.

Although there is a fair share of your standard teams, there are quite a few that stick out. Yuujirou and Deshi Kitsune have decided to team up to use what I call, Team Chunky, with K Zangief, Chang, and Raiden! Other notable deviations include Kodama's K-Dictator, which is normally reserved for A Groove due to his strong Custom Combo.

So go ahead and check out my Youtube Channel for more CvS2 match footage!

Happy New Year everyone!

CvS2 : GAME VERSUS Ranbat FINAL

Today I will be giving you the last batch of uploads from the national tournament hosted by Game Versus that features some of the best Japanese players as well as some casual footage. If you missed the first couple of playlists from this tournament, click on here, here, and here!

This set of uploads focuses on P Rugal, who apparently plays both Rugal and P Groove! As strong as Parry is, this player shows that he knows when to block, when to parry, and when to appropriately go on the offensive to pull through some incredibly clutch situations! On the other hand, Sakamoto's relentless K-Akuma and K-Morrigan is also quite impressive to watch, having a “No Fear!” attitude.

Although the Game Versus footage is over, there is still more CvS2 to come with a recent Ranbat this winter to round out 2011. So remember to check out my Youtube Channel for more updates to this Ranbat, and any other CvS2 news!

CvS2 : GAME VERSUS Ranbat Part 3

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all have happy holidays because I am happy to give you more Capcom vs SNK 2 videos this weekend! This set of footage contains some matches from the Game Versus tournament that Japan recently held, as well as casuals that feature some of country's best players. If you missed the first two sets of uploads you can click here and here to see them!

Although there has been a great representation of every Groove so far, there has been no N Groove. Tsugunosuke however, is here to remedy that situation showing that this underrated Groove can still hang with the best. He has his work cut out for him however, as he is facing both Ohara and Gao's agressive playstyle. Those that are following the footage might remember Yane! He busts out his insane K-Haohmaru from out of nowhere, saying to everyone not to write this character off as a pushover.

If you enjoy what you see, remember to check out my Youtube Channel for more updates on CvS2 related media and “Like” what you see so more people will find high quality CvS2 in their searches! Check out the preview and the playlist link after the jump!

CvS2 Notebook of Game Breaking Highlights and Leftovers

Sonic Hurricane uploaded a CvS2 video that is a compilation of clips featuring game engine exploits and glitches. These were recorded back in 2004 but Maj was kind enough to put all the clips together into one big ass video. Lots of pretty goofy stuff in this one so be sure to check it out when you get a few!

Also, if you're wondering what the hell is going on in some of these clips, there is a transcript which you can find here

Would You Like to See a Rerelease of Capcom vs SNK 2?

The response to our CvS2 stream over the weekend was phenomenal to say the least. Within the chat, all across Twitter and Facebook players shared their excitement, saying "CvS2 is the best fighting game ever" -- or something closely related anyway -- and were really happy to see it get some exposure.

Many of these same people mentioned they hope to see this game hit XBL/PSN someday as well, and while the question above is rhetorical, it does open up a number of other debatable topics such as -- dun, dun, duuuunn, you guessed it -- rebalancing the game!

So, I wanted to make this post not only in the hopes that Capcom will see there are still a ton of CvS2 fans out there, but also open a discussion on what you guys would want to see if the game were to hit XBL/PSN one day. Many fans of the series, unlike 3s fans, have said they would hope to see the game rebalanced. Are you in the same boat or do you feel the game should stay the way it is if it were ever to see the light of day on modern consoles? Hit us up in the comments with your thoughts and cross your fingers this gets the ball rolling over at Capcom!
