Nintendo Releases Details on Smash Invitational at E3

Last month, Nintendo announced the first-ever company-organized Super Smash Bros. tournament, to take place during Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014. Not only is this the first Nintendo-run Smash tournament, but it will also be the first tournament for the upcoming Super Smash Bros for Wii U, the next iteration in their acclaimed franchise. Nintendo has shed some light on information regarding the tournament to help people get a bit more excited as E3 2014 inches closer.

There will be "16 highly-skilled Super Smash Bros. players" participating in Super Smash Bros. Invitational, although none have been named so far. The tournament will be hosted on Tuesday, June 10, starting at 4:00 p.m. PST, and will be streamed on both Twitch's E3 channel and Nintendo's Twitch channel. Nintendo also says that "the tournament will also be shown" on their YouTube channel.

For those looking to spectate the tournament in person, the invitational will be held at the Nokia Theater. Wristbands will be required for entry, and only 3,000 wristbands will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Wristband distribution will happen at the Nokia Plaza at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m. PST on the day of the tournament.

The tenth iteration of Why Me Dojo featured the usual Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Ver. 2012 and Super Smash Bros. Melee at Petaluma, CA on Feb. 24, 2014.

Donkey Kong's popular sidekick will be coming to play in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. series of games.

Diddy Kong is the newest character announced to join the main cast in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U, which features companion Donkey Kong. This is Diddy's second appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series; he was introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Zelda Returning For Super Smash Bros. For 3DS & Wii U

Another familiar challenger approaching for the next set of Super Smash Bros. games!

Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda will be playable once again. Based on the latest set of screenshots, Zelda will be based on her appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

As for Zelda's alter-ego in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Shiek, nothing has been revealed. Shiek appeared as an additional playable character in both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

In addition to being playable in the upcoming Mario Kart 8, Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy will be making her premiere in Super Smash Bros. For 3DS and Wii U. She serves as a significant character in Galaxy's universe for being the caretaker of the Lumas species. Rosalina will be able to summon variants of Lumas to assist her in-game.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Toon Link Coming To New Wii U & 3DS Editions

Another returning challenger approaches in the newest line of Super Smash Bros. games.

Toon Link from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks is coming to both Nintendo Wii U and 3DS versions of the new Super Smash Bros. entry. He originally premiered in the third entry, Brawl.

Super Smash Bros: Polygon's Interview With Series Director About Character Selection In New Games

The upcoming Super Smash Bros. games on Nintendo's Wii U and 3DS is still in its early stages. While the series is known for carrying a strong variety of characters of Nintendo and associated, series director speaks out to Polygon on what needs to be considered to have a character available.

Masahiro Sakurai, founder of developer Sora Ltd. and co-director behind the latest Super Smash Bros. games, finds the difficult process of character selection to be stressful, "almost to the brink of death." Info featured in the piece explains the importance of a character added into the universe and the possible reaction to a character in a previous entry not returning to the latest games.

E3 2013: Super Smash Bros. For 3DS & Wii U Revealed, Mega Man Featured With Popular Nintendo Icons

Nintendo's Direct broadcast brought up the full reveal of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games planned for both the Wii U and 3DS!

Developed by Sora and Namco Bandai Games, Super Smash Bros. For 3DS and Super Smash Bros. For Wii U will make a return of the franchise since Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the original Nintendo Wii back in 2008. The Nintendo 3DS version will feature a cel-shaded-style graphical approach to characters. Stages featured in the trailer for the version includes settings from Nintendogs and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. The Wii U edition will feature the graphical consistency found in Brawl but with the next-gen flavoring. The Final Smash feature, introduced in Brawl, will be making a return.

As always popular Nintendo characters like Mario, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu and Link will be appearing. Making their premiere in this new entry of games is the villager body type from Animal Crossing, Mega Man... and the Wii Fit Trainer?!

Namco Bandai to Develop the Next Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS

It was announced today on Nintendo Direct (live stream press conference of sorts) that Namco Bandai will be developing the next Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. 

The Tales series director, Yoshito Higuchi, will be at the helm of the games development. The game will be developed under the supervision of Masahiro Sakurai -- the original "creative force" behind Super Smash Bros. 

We'll post more details as they become available.
