Review: The King of Fighters XIII Steam Edition

The King of Fighters XIII's console online mode was the stuff of nightmares. While players could technically play each other online, the netcode was bad enough to render all online games unusable for people looking to further their competitive play. It was so bad that people labeled KOF XIII a dead game almost immediately on its launch, believing the offline community alone could not carry the game. Two years later, however, and The King of Fighters XIII Steam Edition arrived to create the definitive version of the game and improve on the problems of its console release. The version for Windows computers is definitely the best version of KOF XIII to date, but it's still not a flawless package.

For those who have never played KOF XIII, it is a game that tries hard to please both new and old players alike. For every instance of SNK Playmore rebooting the franchise in the game, whether it be through redesigned and updated graphics; easier gatling-style combos and other beginner-friendly options like trials mode; or the HD combo system, there is always a gameplay quirk of older SNK games left alone. Some of these quirks include input shortcuts and alternate guard, two exploits found in older KOF games that became “features” during the years. What then emerges from that development mentality is a game that is not really new, except in looks, but that doesn't play exactly like the older SNK games either.

Pocket Rumble Kickstarter Seeks to Revive Neo Geo Pocket Action

It's no surprise that the PC is currently lacking good fighting games; aside from Skullgirls and Capcom ports the market is barren. Cardboard Robot Games is looking to fill that void with its new Pocket Rumble, a game designed with the aesthetics of the past but the complexities of today's popular fighting games.

Styled to look like the fighting games that were developed on the Neo Geo Pocket handheld, Pocket Rumble features a cast of characters with unique playstyles based on common fighter tropes and even includes cameos from Divekick and Fantasy Strike.

The game is currently on Kickstarter with a goal of only $16,000, with stretch goals including GGPO netplay, Story Mode and DLC characters. The game is also currently up on Steam Greenlight.

Tekken Community Saves Player's Home

During the past few years there have been stories within the fighting game community about players getting assistance when they fall on tough times, and members of each different scene helping out their own when a crisis befalls one of its members. This is one of those stories.

Derrick "Dilly" Maechler recently faced payments that he could not make and asked the Tekken community for legitimate ways to earn money quickly. At one poster's behest Maechler also made his PayPal available to posters on Tekken Zaibatsu and created a GoFundMe, hoping that he would find a way to earn the money he needed. Within one month, donors alone had raised enough money that Maechler was able to keep his condo.

The entire story can be found on Tekken Zaibatsu.
