Mortal Kombat Hands-On Impressions; Playstation 3 May Have Exclusive Stage Designed for 3D

Hands-on impressions for Mortal Kombat are surfacing out of the Gamestop Manager's Conference 2010, courtesy of TRMK.  Information has also come out of the conference regarding pre-order bonus for the game!

Here's an impression of the general gameplay. After the jump you will find info on the game's (tentative, as it can change) pre-order bonuses. If you want to get some impressions on a few of the characters, visit TRMK for more info and some photos from the event.

According to TRMK, there was apparently talk that the Playstation 3 version might get an exclusive stage made for 3D.  It was previously revealed that this game would make use of the stereoscopic 3D that Sony is making a big push for lately.

General Impressions:

The game plays soooo smooth. And its very fast, almost seemed too fast at first. Its like the RUN button is always on. It's not clunky like MK vs DC was. I asked Ed if Capcom made it, I don't think he liked that comment. LOL

Combos just seem to flow out so naturally, the possiblities for them seem endless. I won my match by using a simple standing double punch into a fireball juggle, then shadow kick. (that seems like a good 40%) Ed said the combo damage will be toned down drastically in the next build.

Seems you can
use your breaker to snap out of Scorpion's spear before you are combo'd/hit. Reptile does more damage while invisible. Also saw, when Sektor vs Sektor, the homing missles cancel each other out if done by both players at the same time.

Also saw a Kung Lao player throw his hat, teleport kick opponent into oncoming hat, teleport again, into a 3 hit combo, finished off by a hat throw juggle!
That got applause from the crowd.

TRMK.org has come up with some gameplay video for Mortal Kombat! The videos were taken at the Gamestop Manager's Conference 2010. There are two videos. The first one is a one on one match while the second showcases the game's tag team element. Do not expect any high level play here, but it is nice seeing more of the game in action.

ScrewAttack: Top 10 Worst Mortal Kombat Fatalities

With so much hype lately around the new Mortal Kombat going back to it's roots, lets not forget the series numerous stumbles along the way. With so many ridiculous -- and sometimes straight up lazy -- Fatatlities, Babalities, Animalities it's a tall order to list just the Top 10 but ScrewAttack did a really good job here. My favorite? Number 8!

Thanks to IMNEXTONLINE for the heads up on this one.

GamerTrailers Interviews Ed Boon About Taking Mortal Kombat Back to its Roots

Gametrailers interviewed NetherRealm's creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon about Mortal Kombat.Ed talks about taking the series back to its roots for this latest entry.

More interestingly is that he admits that this Mortal Kombat will be the first one to consciously cater to the hardcore tournament player. If it works out, it is certainly welcome to those who want more than to just trade uppercuts and would like to see the game stay on tournament scenes around the country longer than previous efforts.

G4 All Access Preview: Mortal Kombat

G4 posted a video preview of Mortal Kombat with Senior Producer of the game, Hans Lo. There isn't too many earth-shattering details here, though it's mentioned once again that the PS3 version will have a 3D stereoscopic feature for TVs that support it.

Thanks to @FocusAttack on Twitter for the tip.

KOTAKU: NEW MORTAL KOMBAT DLC DETAILS

Kotaku put together a solid interview with Ed Boon, talking about the upcoming DLC plans and possible PC port for Mortal Kombat. They are going for a very "aggressive" DLC plan, with everything from new fatalities to new characters in the works. The most interesting thing I found in the article is that DLC characters will not be included on the disc, and will have to be downloaded directly to the system. This is a huge point due to the fact that many players feel cheated when they have to pay for a character -- or anything else for that matter -- that is already included on the disc.

NextGN.com is reporting that a new Mortal Kombat Arcade compilation is coming to PS3, according to ShopTo, which is a UK based video game retailer. Other details are not known at this time about the compilation, but with Mortal Kombat 9 set to release Spring of next year this seems like a good way of getting players reacquainted with the series.

GAMEINFORMER MORTAL KOMBAT PREVIEW

GameInformer put together a preview for Mortal Kombat with a handful of new screenshots. There really isn't anything we don't already know here but it's worth checking out if you haven't kept up with the game thus far.

Here is an excerpt from the article, you can read the rest here.

Most of the characters are equipped with moves and weapons previously seen in the series, but the fighting that unfolds and the combos that are constructed are based mostly off of player ingenuity. “I want players to discover their own combos,” says Boon. The game offers plenty of pre-scripted combos for each character, but players will find new ways to chain the sequences and special moves together. You’ll even be able to create combos that link the attacks of tag partners.

Mortal Kombat 9: Gamasutra Interview with Ed Boon

Mortal Kombat 9 made a great impression at E3.Gamasutra has put up the first part of an interview they had with Ed Boon of NetherRealm Studios about the upcoming Mortal Kombat 9. The interview thus far doesn't contain new information about the game itself, but I thought the following passage was very encouraging. It seems like Ed and his team really are making the right moves with this game. Here's a sample. Hit the link below to read the full interview.

...this [new Mortal Kombat] is the first one in a while that we've really made a conscious effort that we are going to focus hard on the hardcore player," he said. "At the same time, we want to stay accessible. But the simple numbers of it is that there are just far, far more of the casual player than the hardcore player."

"The hardcore player is the most vocal. If you just went online and just kind of look at forums and all that stuff, you'd think that everyone was a hardcore player," he continued. "But the reality is that those are the ones who care to the point of getting online [to express their opinions], and they're passionate and they're very opinionated. They're very important certainly from the standpoint of they're the ones that communicate the most, but the reality is that there are more casual players out there."

"This game, we are really going after that hardcore player," he added. "We have some features in the game that are really layered into the game. I think the casual people will still have a good time, but they're not going to dig as deep in terms of fighting mechanic, features and strategy."

12 Groundbreaking Moments in Fighting Game History

Dorkly.com put together a list of what they feel is 12 of the most groundbreaking moments in fighting game history. Of course, opinions will vary on this topic depending on if you're a casual or competitive player, but it's worth checking out for some of the videos alone.

Here is an excerpt on their bit out about Mortal Kombat including a video showing a number of old school fatalities!

7. Mortal Kombat As The First Truly Controversial Game

Considering terrorizing innocent bystanders with stolen vehicles and submachine guns has become somewhat of a norm in today’s videogames, it’s hard to believe anyone ever had a problem with the content of the legendary fighting game, Mortal Kombat. But if it wasn’t for MK, we wouldn’t have games like Grand Theft Auto to live out our criminal aspirations

NEW MORTAL KOMBAT FATALITIES, DLC CHARACTERS PLANNED

ScrewAttack has what everyone has been waiting for -- a montage of Fatalities from the new Mortal Kombat! A must see for sure.

Also, this image surfaced on NeoGAF today showing the demo character select screen. You'll see at the bottom right there is a DLC icon where players can access characters they downloaded. This also means balance changes and updates to the current roster isn't out of the question either.

E3: HANDS ON WITH MORTAL KOMBAT 9 & INTERVIEW WITH ED BOON

GAMESPOT put together a solid preview of Mortal Kombat 9, including an interview with Ed Boone. Below are some of the major points of the preview:

  • Around 26 total characters planned for the final roster
  • Real time damage -- clothes will rip and wounds will open up as the fight progresses.
  • Strong focus on "custom combos".
  • Characters will have souped up special moves that use meter much like EX moves in Street Fighter.
  • Super Bar can be used for "X-Ray" combos where the camera will "zoom in" showing different bones and body parts being destroyed.
  • Tag battles are in -- tag in your partner to extend combos like the VS series or Tekken Tag.
  • Scheduled for Spring 2011 release.

You can also check out Kotaku's hands-on preview by clicking here.

Truth be told, I never expected to cover much Mortal Kombat news on iPlayWinner but this game is looking very promising so stay tuned for more updates!

Mortal Kombat 9 - Kung Lao Body Split Fatality

I'm not entirely sure where this footage came from -- I don't recall seeing this in the newest trailer -- but it appears to be part of an E3 demo reel. Either way, this is the first look at Mortal Kombat 9 fatalities with Kung Lao splitting Reptile in half. Ouch.

Thanks to "Ryu Hayabusa" for the heads up.

E3: MORTAL KOMBAT 9

Okay, I haven't played Mortal Kombat since MKII but man this trailer for the new game really looks incredible. Not only are they going back to 2D gameplay, it looks like there may be some tag action involved as well!

With Street Fighter 4 being a massive success, I think it was the right move to return to classic 2D gameplay. Throwing fatalities and recognizable characters into the mix, I can see this game being popular not only on a competitive level but also on the stream as well. If Mortal Kombat 9 has solid gameplay and legit netcode, this could end up being a huge hit.

Here's hoping to more footage next week straight from E3!
