Jun the Swan - Tatsunoko

"Don't mistake my Science Team Ninja Yo-Yo for a simple toy."

TATSUNOKO VS CAPCOM BIO:

The only female member of the Science Ninja Team (which fights the evil organization Galactor), Jun specializes in explosives and sabotaging enemies’ forts. In battle she uses a customized yo-yo-type weapon that has been merged with a knife, and mesmerizes her enemies with her sophisticated moves.

CHARACTER ORGIN

Jun the Swan originated in Tatsunoko's 1972 series Science Team Ninja Gatchaman. It is also known as the abbreviated name Gatchaman, the English adaptation title Battle of the Planets, or G-Force. Jun the Swan is a member of a 5-member super team.

GAMEPLAY DETAILS

Nimble and agile, Jun the swan is easy to pick up but slightly less easy to master. At a basic level she's friendly for beginners, having simple combos and fairly straightforward attacks. She may seem a little weak at dealing damage, but that's where some of Jun's more subtle abilities come into play. At a higher level Jun the Swan has solid offense and fantastic combo ability, with many ways to aid her opponent which make her the sort of character who can fit in with just about any team combination. Her many deceptive tricks will only help to make her just that much more annoying to fight against in the hands of a dedicated player.

CHARACTER STATS

Difficulty: Basic-intermediate

Style: All-rounder/rushdown

Defensive power: she lacks a fast anti-air and her HP is just below average, but with her yo-yo and bombs as well as the large hitbox on her jumping heavy attack, she has fair defense. Her attacks are also quite safe. She tends to build meter quickly and can mega crash often.

Offensive power: Jun doesn't deal huge damage, but she does build a lot of meter. Her damage output is respectable but not amazing.

Approach strength: Thanks to her speed and safe attacks, Jun has a very strong approach and with the right assist she is able to put on significant pressure at close range. Her Dancing Swan is a fairly fast overhead and can be thrown into he combos for agressive mixups.

Combo ability: Her attacks all link into each other easily, allowing for long freeform combos that build plenty of bar while dealing sufficient damage. She is able to combo from her Dancing Swan as well, giving her plenty of options. More advanced combos include the use of her bombs and yoyo's to do small combos at a distance.

Meter Usage: Jun can choose to conserve her meter (which she builds quite quickly) for megacrash or to finish her combos with a Hyper attack. Since her Talon Burst is such a useful Hyper to use in Delayed Hyper Combos, there's a lot of fun things that Jun can do with her meter.

Key Techniques: Jun players should learn how to use her bombs in combos and how to airdash and combo after landing a dancing swan. More advanced players should learn how to use her bombs to further extend air combos and do situational distance combos. She also has a corner loop that can be repeated a couple of times, boosting her damage output slightly.

Partner Options: Jun goes well with anyone and everyone. However she benefits from a character who has strong Hyper moves and a useful anti-air assist. For this reason she partners well with the likes of Tekkaman, Chun Li, Zero and Karas

Special Moves

STRING BOMB - IN AIR OK

QUARTER CIRCLE FORWARD + ATTACK

This is Jun's ranged attack.  Jun swings her yo-yo, and if it connects it attaches a bomb to your opponent.  You can attach up to five bombs on your opponent at one time, but they will all disappear if Jun gets hit.  Thus, there is some risk in attempting to get that many bombs attached.  The strength of the attack buton you use will determine the range of the swing.  The Light Attack version swings the shortest distance but has the quickest start-up. The Hard Attack version has the longest swing distance but has the slowest start-up.  This move can be performed in the air.

BINGO! - IN AIR OK

QUARTER CIRCLE BACK + ATTACK

Jun gestures and all of the bombs currently placed on the opponent will explode.  Of course, the more bombs currently on the opponent when you detonate them, the more effective it will be.  You cannot do this move if no bombs are currently attached to your opponent. This move can be blocked, so use it in a combo or when the opponent is not expecting it (it is very fast). This move can be performed in the air.

LIGHTNING KICK

FORWARD DOWN DOWN-FORWARD + ATTACK

Jun throws her yo-yo straight up and then uses it to pull herself upward with a kick.  It has a fairly slow start-up if used as an anti-air but you can combo out of it.  The Light Attack version is a fake wire swing, the Medium Attack version is a small jump and the Hard Attack version is a big jump anti-air. The fake version may seem useless at first, but it can be done rapidly to build up some meter at any time Jun is idle.

DANCING SWAN

BACK DOWN DOWN-BACK + ATTACK

Jun pauses for a moment and then lunges at your opponent.  If she hits, Jun teleports around kicking the opponent for an auto-combo delivering good damage.  This move is useful when your opponent is not expecting it or after a move which causes a lot of stun.  This move must be blocked high by your opponent and it works on giants as well. The strength of the attack button used determines how far she leaps and how many hits she does.  The Light Attack version having the fastest start-up but doing the least amount of damage with Hard Attack version doing the opposite. It is possible to pursue the opponent and combo after the light version, and the strong version can be followed up with her hyper moves.

SWAN RUSH

IN AIR
BACK DOWN DOWN-BACK + ATTACK

Jun executes a spinning kick very similar to Ken the Eagle's Eagle Rush.  If Jun misses with this move she does not glide all the way to the ground, however, which makes it safer but harder to land.  The Light Attack version travels the farthest distance but does the least amount of damage with the Hard Attack version doing the opposite.

Hyper Combos

TALON BURST - HYPER COMBO LEVEL 1

QUARTER CIRCLE FORWARD + ANY TWO ATTACKS

Jun does a yo-yo combo which plants four bombs on the opponent and then detonates them. Since Jun can have 5 bombs on the opponent at once, this super can deal more damage if the opponent has at least 1 bomb on them to begin with. Very easy to combo into and fairly strong, this is a very useful super. It is also one of the reasons why Jun the Swan is such a good assist character. The fourth hit pops the opponent up very high and is perfect for Delayed Hyper Combos into slower partner supers.

MIRAGE SWAN - HYPER COMBO LEVEL 1

BACK, DOWN, DOWN-BACK  + ANY TWO ATTACKS

This is a bigger version of Jun's Dancing Swan.  It is the same as the original except that it is far more powerful.  It is very easy to combo into this Hyper as well.  However, you can not use Swan Mirage in the air. Generally not all that useful compared to scratch burst, but it is a flashy way to finish off an opponent.

SCIENCE NINPO: PHOENIX - HYPER COMBO LEVEL 3

QUARTER CIRCLE BACK + ANY TWO ATTACKS

Jun does a vertical flip with lots of height.  If it hits your opponent, a giant phoenix will attack them for good damage.  It is not as powerful as other Level 3 Hyper Combos but it easy to combo into with very fast start-up.

Command Normals

Spin Sweep

F + M

Overhead

F + H

You swipe your enemy with your foot which can be blocked low followed by swinging the other foot down for a second overhead hit.  This move causes a lot of stun, which is great for combos.

Assists

Assist

Jun will use her light bind bomb as an assist. This is one of the most useful assists in the game. It stuns the opponent and is great for extending combos, and it also covers a good distance on the screen, making it very useful for characters who require projectile support. As an added bonus, it even leaves a bomb on contact.

Variable Counter

Variable Hyper Combination

During a Variable Hyper combination, Jun will use Scratch Burst.
