White Tower: Kuwait's Fighting Game Scene by 7ayat

Kuwait has a long tradition with fighting games, and like the rest of the world its scene has seen a resurgence since the release of Street Fighter 4. This year three of its top players will be headed to Japan to represent the country at Tougeki (SBO), the world's premier arcade tournament. 7ayat, one of the scene's notable players, gives us a tour of Kuwait's fighting game community.

Since the beginning, Kuwait has been notable for having a strong fighting scene in various games and have produced very strong players in each respective game.  These games include Street Fighter 2, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear Accent Core, Third Strike, and now Street Fighter 4 and now Super Street Fighter 4.  This year, three of our players will be representing the country in Japan's premier Tougeki arcade tournament. The place for competition is White Tower, Kuwait’s premier and longest running arcade for fighting games. White Tower brings in the top players.

Gamespot: Capcom Likely to Show Arcade Version at Next Week's AMOU Show; Hints for New Characters Expected Soon

Gamespot has reported that Capcom could possibly have the arcade version of Super Street Fighter 4 on display at the AMOU (Amusement Machine Operator's Union) show next week.

This show takes place from September 9th through 11th in Japan and is an event for arcade operators and dealers. Capcom has not officially announced the game for the show, but it seems very likely considering that the arcade version is set for release later this year.

The site also passed on information that IPW posted last week, that assistant producer for arcade SSF4 Tamoaki Ayano is expected to provide more hints about the game's new characters by the end of this week according to the game's official blog.

What is new is that Gamespot states that Japanese weekly gaming magazine Famitsu is also expected to publish a semi-reveal in next week's issue.

So, between expected blog hints from Tamoaki Ayano, a possible article reveal in Famitsu, and Capcom making a likely appearance at the AMOU show next week, it's likely we'll be hearing more information about the new characters very soon.

No Story Mode for Arcade Super Street Fighter 4

Someone asked Super Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono via Twitter if the arcade version would have the storylines and animated intros that the console versions have. Ono replied by saying that those elements would not be in the arcade version due to space constraints.

Maybe they are saving that room for new characters.

Starbase Arcade: How We Built Our Own Fighting Game Community

Jay "VDon" Nguyen gives us a run down of what it takes to build successful fighting game scene based on his experiences managing the Wednesday night sessions at Starbase Arcade. Everyone's scene is different, but hopefully these pointers will give players looking to start a scene or build upon their current scene some ideas on how to do so.

When I first got reacquainted with the fighting game community 10 months ago it was because of a little game called Street Fighter IV.  I was excited to play and desperately looking for some competition.  Like many others, I started my search online at the matchmaking forums of Shoryuken.com.  Doing this enabled me to connect with a couple of local players.  Like me, they also were looking for more competition and driving all across the San Francisco Bay Area to meet this competition.  Our crew consisted of 1 fledgling player (me!) and 2 tournament players with a vast lack of matchup experience needed to win.

Today, we enjoy a flourishing fight game community.  We hold weekly Wednesday sessions and have one of the largest attendances of any NorCal session currently active.  Our player base has gone from 3 to an average of 25-30 players per session.  We’ve had as many as 50 players at one of our casual sessions.  Not tournament, just a casual session.  How did this happen?  When did this happen?  What changed?

I’d like to share my experience from 10 months ago up until today and give a recollection of how NorCal’s North Bay went from nothing, to one of the hypest sessions this side of California.

Step One: Attending Other People’s Events

North Bay had a few issues when I first started playing here.  First off, no one knew if there were any serious players here.  The other issue is that our location is secluded from the rest of the scene.  We’re essentially way off in the corner and for anyone to come to us, they’d have to pay toll, cross bridges and go a long ways to play in an unproven territory.  Let’s face it; no one’s coming to North Bay just because we asked.  We had to attend tournaments and sessions and prove ourselves.  The first thing we did was practiced.  A lot.  Soon after, we attended tournaments all across the Bay Area.  It was a long drive everywhere we went, but if people saw how dedicated we were, it might make them wonder how much of a scene we have back home.  The goal wasn’t to win tournaments, although we did try our damnedest.  The goal was to show consistent improvement and dedication so people knew that we were serious.

New Characters for Arcade Super Street Fighter 4? New Scan from SSF4 Japanese Arcade Location Test

"Here Comes New Challengers?!"

A new scan has surfaced and is circulating with pictures of the new Nesys cards, bonus stages, and characters. This most likely is related to the location test for the arcade version of Super Street Fighter 4 which will be in Japan later this week.

Something that stands out about this scan is the blue text at the bottom of the picture that states "Here Comes New Challengers?!"

Capcom has not announced any new characters, so the blue text may refer only to the new entrants to the SF4 series (Dudley, Ibuki, etc). But you never know!

ARCADE VERSION OF SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4 PLAYABLE THIS WEEKEND IN JAPAN

Oichi over at VersusCity recently posted that the arcade version of Super Street Fighter 4 will have a location test this weekend in Akihabara. More location tests will be held in Japan over the following weeks, and you can check out the dates and location by clicking here. This was confirmed with screenshots of the arcade version at the official CAPCOM site

Oichi also mentions there is apparently a new ranking system for the arcade version -- one number for your national rank and another for your local rank. There have been hints of additional features not seen in the console version being added to the arcade version as well, so we'll keep you updated as new info surfaces about this release of the game.

IS THIS THE TRUE SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4 ARCADE UNIT?

According to Andria Sang, the Japanese Super Street Fighter 4 blog was updated with this picture, and mentions that true development has started on the arcade version of the game. They say "Juri and Hakan are moving on a Vewlix cabinet, though the instruction card is from the original game."

Though I assume this has been the plan all along, this is good news for arcade operators who already bought Street Fighter 4, because this seems to be a pretty strong indicator that the upgrade from the original to Super can be done on all the same hardware.

VERSUSCITY: JAPANESE ARCADE LEXICON

Oichi put together an awesome lexicon of terms that you will hear in Japanese arcades. He has the terms in both English and Japanese, and many of them also have short descriptions as well. Very interesting to say the least, here's an excerpt from VersusCity.

I’ve been working on this for a couple of months during my free time, and it’s gotten big enough that I feel justified in publishing it. Check the top bar for the Arcade Lexicon link, which contains a wealth of common terms used in Japanese arcade games and fighting games. The list contains the English meaning, plus the Japanese word both in kanji and in romaji. There are also notes to describe some of the more intricate terms. As always, if you have suggestions, I’ll be more than happy to field them!

You can also check out our Glossary here on iPlayWinner where you will find a ton of Fighting Game terms, even slang!

Sudden Interest Spurred Arcade Version of Super Street Fighter 4

Magus1234 levels up at Japanese arcade Big Box. This arcade can soon upgrade to Super SF4.

Soon after Capcom announced that Super Street Fighter 4 was in development, people began asking for an arcade version.  The game's producer, Yoshinori Ono, was asked again and again about such a release over the following months, but he would only commit that he wanted an arcade version as well and was trying to convince Capcom, but the company needed enough interest to justify the costs.

Suddenly, the company announced that an arcade version was indeed in the works.  What changed so suddenly?

"What changed," Ono told Kotaku, "was that I was in the middle of lobbying various branches of Capcom for the capital to release the game to arcades" in March.  Orders began coming in, he said, and "Now it looks like we can make enough money off of the release to warrant an arcade version."

Of course, an arcade version of Super Street Fighter 4 is good for Japanese arcade players.  It's good for Japanese arcades.  It's also great for the community as a whole, as the Japanese arcade scene is generally looked upon as a leader in developing new strategies and techniques in fighting games.  It's also good for the small but vocal arcade community in the United States.

Ono also confirmed to Kotaku that arcade owners would not need a new cabinet or arcade board to upgrade to Super Street Fighter 4.  They only need to change out the hard drive.

More Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Info: More Characters & Balance Adjustments Not Ruled Out

In addition to the normal Developer Blog post, the Japanese Super Street Fighter 4 Blog also made a post about the Japanese National Tournament and about the arcade version of Super Street Fighter 4 as well.

Andriasang states that the arcade release of Super Street Fighter 4 will come after the console versions, although no details on just how long it will lag behind.

What is interesting is that Andriasang states that Super SF4 assistant producer Shiozawa does not rule out the possibility of adjustments and adding more characters for the arcade version.

If this were the case, such changes would likely be added to the console versions via download.

Let me say this though just to be clear. Not ruling out the possibility of something does not make it an intention or an announcment. However, the fact that they have not closed the door immediately is worthy of note.

The "Nakky Blog" (names for Shiozawa's nickname) will become the "Saikyo Blog" (Japanese for "strongest" or "ultmate") after the game's April 28 release and will be written by Tomaoki Ayano, who will be working on the arcade version.

KOF SKY STAGE

So this is slightly off-topic, but I figured some of our readers may have an interest in this. SNK-Playmore has released an overhead shooter based on their King of Fighters series called KOF SKYSTAGE in Japan. In this game you control characters such as Iori, Kyo and Mai, flying through stages as you shoot down enemies using the characters signature attacks. Any of you who have played Ikaruga or Mars Matrix, it's pretty much the same deal.

Anyway, lets be real for a second: what is SNK thinking? I'm sure the game is entertaining, but obviously a game like this takes money and man-power to create and they could be using these same resources to improve their King of Fighters fighting game franchise. That said, perhaps these shooter games generate more revenue over the long run in Japan? Who knows really, but here is a trailer for the game itself, and be sure to check out their official site for more images from the game.

IPLAYWINNER INTERVIEW: KSK

iPlayWinner presents you with our first international interview featuring none other than the legendary Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Alex Player, KSK! He is more than just a player though -- he is an integral part of the Japanese fighting game scene as he owns and operates Gamer's Vision, a hot bed for some of the best players in Japan.

KSK is also the organizer of the GODSGARDEN tournament,  which was met with much international acclaim as it features top level players such as Daigo and Mago, with a top notch live stream to boot. It was also one of the first events to have a females only Street Fighter 4 tournament which helped promote female players in Japan such as ChocoBlanka.

With GODSGARDEN 2 right around the corner, we wanted to talk to him a bit about the Japanese fighting game scene, running an arcade, multiple events and also how the console-only release of Super Street Fighter 4 will affect Japanese arcades.

iPW: What do you think of American tournaments?

KSK: From my experience, Double Elimination, like EVO, is very exciting. I know it takes much longer but players can get more satisfaction and some ease compared to a single elimination, whether win or lose. I love the pressures when I'm in losers tournament, I love the feelings of superiority when I'm in winners one. It makes good contrast between winners and losers.

iPW: Do you ever watch streams of American tournaments?

KSK: I watched EVO'09 on the stream. It seemed well equipped with gear such as cameras so I could watch players' faces and feel atomosphere. It was great!

iPW: Are more arcades in Japan looking into doing live streams?

KSK: I think the pioneer of live streaming from arcade is Nakano-TRF. It brings many newcomers to the arcades -- but, on the other hand, when said player watches the live streams, he's at home, not at the arcade. They provide no revenue to the arcades so it makes arcade owners negative or passive about live streaming. Still, I think that live streaming is very effective to show the excitement of arcades.

iPW: Do you still play 3s often? Why do you play Alex?

KSK: I still play 3s. I'm taking part in grade matches for 3s at NishiNippori-VERSUS. I restarted Ranking Battle for 3s at Gamer's Vision [ KSK's arcade ] recently. I love Alex's dynamic moves and arts. Fact is, I'm not good at complicated inputs. Alex is easier to handle!

iPW: How did you come up with the idea of Gods Garden?

KSK: In Japan, arcade players are becoming fewer year by year. So, when I try to give a boost to arcades, there's not enough man-power. Teenagers in Japan rarely come to arcades and have chance to learn how to play fighting games. So they don't know how it is to be a serious fan of fighting games -- they only play on console! At one point, console games were no more than substitute for the games in arcades, but now we can play games for the arcades on console. Sometimes, the games for console is superior to the one in arcades.

It means that there's no reason to visit arcades for teenagers, but I want show them how exciting the arcade atmosphere is. I want to show them how great players in the arcades are. This is a motive for organizing Godsgarden.
