Vanilla SF4's Long Lost Technique: Chun-Li Guard Break

Desk uploaded a pretty cool video today that showcases some new tech for an old game. In Vanilla SF4, characters could set up unblockable Ultras due to the fact that the opponent would be unable to block during the Ultra freeze animation. With Chun-Li, he discovered a way you can put the opponent into block stun and push them into her Kikouken to break their guard and land a full unscaled Ultra.  A little hard to explain so just go ahead and watch the video to see what is all about!

Super Street Fighter 4: AE 2012 - Cody Combo Guide by RyuApprentice

RyuApprentice has put together a very nice combo guide for Cody from Super Street Fighter 4: AE 2012.  It was designed for beginner to intermediate level players of the character and provides very useful information such as link data information, damage and stun, and some basics about the overall usefulness of some of his normals.  The presentation makes it very easy to practice combos and get an idea of how his combos work.  Thanks to SRK for pointing this out.

Excellent Asian Adventures Episode 9 - Counter Cotton Pickers

Cross Counter Asia's Zhi and Xian are back with another episode of Excellent Asian Adventures, where they troll Ranked Match in Super SF4: AE for our amusement.  But this time it looks like they are the ones getting trolled.  Beware of jackho556699, apparently.  Oh, and if this episode is meant to be an ad for the Madcatz V.S. Fightstick it didn't work out too well!

Street Fighter 4 Tool-Assisted Combo Video 16: Dan

After a bit of a wait after episode 15, Maj is back with a new Tool-Assisted Combo Video (TACV); this time featuring Dan!  I love the way Dan is animated in the Street Fighter 4 series, so I make it a point to watch any combo video with him as the star.  Does he taunt in this one? Hell yeah he does! Also note, this isn't Super, it's vanilla SF4.  It's still fun to watch, because it's Dan and it's Maj.

The Ayano Cup - Street Fighter 4 5v5 Tournament

Updated on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 9:42PM by Registered Commenterhaunts

Updated on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 2:42PM by Registered Commenterhaunts

Picture I took last year at the Shiozawa Cup held at Big Box arcade.VersusCity put together an article on the upcoming Street Fighter 4 tournament in Japan called the Ayano Cup. I attended the Shiozawa Cup last year -- which is pretty much the same tournament just with a different name -- and it was really wild. A ton of players showed up, a ton of heavy hitters, and even some drama between the USA and Japanese teams. It was a blast and if the Ayano Cup is anything like the Shiozawa Cup last year it should be insane.

White Tower: Kuwait's Fighting Game Scene by 7ayat

Kuwait has a long tradition with fighting games, and like the rest of the world its scene has seen a resurgence since the release of Street Fighter 4. This year three of its top players will be headed to Japan to represent the country at Tougeki (SBO), the world's premier arcade tournament. 7ayat, one of the scene's notable players, gives us a tour of Kuwait's fighting game community.

Since the beginning, Kuwait has been notable for having a strong fighting scene in various games and have produced very strong players in each respective game.  These games include Street Fighter 2, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear Accent Core, Third Strike, and now Street Fighter 4 and now Super Street Fighter 4.  This year, three of our players will be representing the country in Japan's premier Tougeki arcade tournament. The place for competition is White Tower, Kuwait’s premier and longest running arcade for fighting games. White Tower brings in the top players.

Direct Feed Footage of Street Fighter 4 Grand Finals for USA Qualifiers for SBO 2010

Finally there is high quality direct feed footage of the Grand Finals from the recent SBO 2010 USA qualifiers for Street Fighter 4. This video was taken directly from the arcade cabinet and features the Grand Finals between Team EG vs Team We're Going to Japan.  If you're wondering why they are playing regular Street Fighter 4 instead of Super Street Fighter 4, it's because SBO is an arcade tournament and the arcade version of the latter has yet to be released.

PopMatters Examines Chun-Li's Design

PopMatters.com has posted a pretty interesting article about the aesthetics of Chun-Li's character design.  Thanks to Shoryuken.com for bringing this to our attention.

Here's an excerpt:

As a result, Chun-Li’s sexuality becomes something more than an incidental quality to be admired merely because she inherently possesses an extraordinary physical trait.  Chun-Li’s thighs might be eroticized, but they represent an earned physical extraordinariness.  To admire them is to acknowledge that she has done something.  Unlike the outrageous breasts of most contemporary fighting game characters (which actually seem even more unlikely given that these women would seem to need to possess an extraordinary athleticism and muscular development to achieve the impossible physical feats that they do perform—such athleticism would seemingly reduce the possibility of such body types, not result in a proliferation of them), Chun-Li’s outrageous legs have some rational connection to the outrageous acts that she can perform.

Fighting Game Comedy - Sagat's Angry Scar... "It's Guaranteed!"

Here's a funny little video that was posted earlier today. While it may be a bit repetative, for a couple chuckles it is well worth the 5 minutes it takes to view. Hats off to video maker Former, this video seems like it took quite some time to capture, edit and post and the joy achieved from Street Fighter is apparent in this short youtube video.

Super Street Fighter 4 Xbox Live Avatar Items Coming July 15th

Finally we can show our Street Fighter love on our Xbox Live Avatars! As a huge Street Fighter fan myself, I've been wondering for many months now why we haven't gotten any Street Fighter 4-themed items to put on our Xbox Live Avatars.

Now they are almost here! On July 15th you'll be able to get the Avatar costumes and items pictured on the left.  Each of the costumes will cost 320 MS Points ($4). Hopefully the Super SF4 t-shirts on the bottom row will be cheaper and be in line with other single garment prices.

Street Fighter 4 / Super Street Fighter 4 Official Complete Works "Highly Likely" To Be Published in US

The Street Fighter 4 / Super Street Fighter 4 Official Complete Works artbook was released in Japan last week.  It is 176 pages and features all of the official artwork created for the Street Fighter 4 series of games.  It includes character and design sketches, interviews, and promotional materials.

It is available now through PlayAsia here.

However, if you want an english-language copy, you might be in luck. Capcom's Seth Killian, on the Capcom Unity boards, has said that there is a good chance this book will hit the US. Here's what he said when asked if the artbook would be published in the US:

Seth Killian:  Our licensing group reports they are also interested, so it looks highly likely that you will see a US release

We will keep you posted if it becomes official.

Basic Tips for Dealing with the Blanka Menace

With the release of Super Street Fighter 4, there are a lot of new players out there.  There are also many players who are trying out new characters.  This is Blanka's time to shine, as he is really his most effective when the opponent doesn't know how to deal with his tricks.  Of course, this makes him one of the most annoying matchups when you are fighting against him.

In this article you'll find tips for dealing with some of the more common situations you'll find yourself in during a Blanka matchup.

The tips are also pretty much universal as well and should work regardless of character.  The only things that will be character specific would be your ability to punish Blanka after you've dealt with his attack.

These tips also work for both Street Fighter 4 and Super Street Fighter 4.

This guide is meant for players who are of beginner to intermediate level of skill.

If you have anything that you feel should be added to this article or a correction needs to be made, (regarding the situations in this article, further articles are planned for other situations), feel free to hit the comments. If we incorporate it into the article we will add your name to the article as a contributor.

Avoid the match-opening whiffed Blanka Ball into Bite Trick:

The match begins. Blanka immediately uses a Rolling Attack. You block on instinct. Instead of hitting, he lands right in front of you and bites you in the face. Sucker!

This is an old trick which still works on a lot of people.  When the match first begins, Blanka players will sometimes use a Light Punch Blanka Ball right as the action gets underway.  Assuming that the opponent doesn’t move, the Blanka Ball will whiff and Blanka will land right in front of you.  Before you can react, Blanka will then grab you and bite your face, which results in hurt pride, good damage, and a knockdown (which any good Blanka thrives on).  The reason it still works is that the first instinct of players not actively anticipating the trick is to block. Blocking holds you in place, which is exactly what Blanka wants.

Street Fighter 4 for iPhone 30% off for a limited time. New Character DLC likely.

Capcom has now discounted the price of Street Fighter 4 on iPhone for a limited time.  It is now 30% off until Thursday, which is only $6.99.  It plays remarkably well for being on a phone.

The company is also asking fans to tell them which Street Fighter character they would like to be made available as DLC in the future.  Five people will be chosen randomly and given a copy of the game for free.  Cammy is already being added to the game as DLC, and this is a good indication that they plan to add even more characters.
