This term has always been specific to 3D games when games such as Virtua Fighter used an elevated platform as a fighting ground. A ring-out is when a player is pushed/hit/comboed outside of the platform area and falls into the outside non-playable ground. This counts as an automatic loss and is still relevant in games such as Soul Calibur4. Because of such a huge gain you get from pushing someone off the platform, correct spacing and zoning must be mastered to successfully add ring-outs to your arsenal. Many players who are not good at doing so will quickly see themselves pushed near the edge and forced to take high-risks to get out, or will generally try to stay in the center of the stage by being overly aggressive.
