The notation used by most fighting game communities, deriving from Japanese BBS'. Numerical notation refers to joystick position as if it were on a keyboard's numpad.

So Capcom notation:

(UB) (U) (UF)

(B) (N) (F)

(DB) (D) (DF)

Becomes:

(7) (8) (9)

(4) (5) (6)

(1) (2) (3)

There's many reasons this notation is used. For one, it's easier to exchange information between language barriers, as it is universally understandable even if you don't speak Japanese. Also, it can represent many commands that are impossible to write out using Capcom notation (Dark Angel, Jump Installs, etc). Lastly, it's nice and easy to read once you get used to it, and especially in games like Guilty Gear and Melty Blood where combos can require multiple Jump Installs, it makes reading them out that much easier.
