Ed Boon Hinting at New MKX Character?

Ed Boon likes to be cryptic. In past Mortal Kombat games there have often been secrets to uncover based on riddles or visual hints with little explanation. As time has moved on, he has taken to using his Twitter account to tease fans with possible revelations for his newest games. And today is no different.

This morning, Boon tweeted a picture of an old World Championship Wrestling grappler with the accompanying text:

"Hmmm.... he reminds me of someone. "

The figure, Super Giant Ninja, was a send-up of Mortal Kombat's Scorpion, but with slightly muted attire so as not to breach the copyright then held by Midway. With Scorpion already confirmed for MKX, several posters on Twitter are suggesting Boon may be hinting at the return of Tremor, a ninja clad in brown who first appeared in Mortal Kombat: Special Forces and made a cameo in the expanded challenge tower in the Vita version of Mortal Kombat 9. Whether that is true or Boon is simply playing with his audience remains to be seen.

Ed Boon Says MKX Will Have More New Characters Than Ever Before

IGN's Luke Karmali recently talked to series creator Ed Boon about the upcoming Mortal Kombat X and its "new blood," so to speak, the new story and characters.

Boon said that while characters like Cassie Cage will not rule out the inclusion of related classic character like her parents, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, the focus is on bringing new players to the forefront. He even said that NetherRealm Studios is "probably introducing more [new characters] in this game than in any other MK title ever." Boon was quick, however, to say that old favorites could always be added to the game later by way of DLC.

Boon also talked more about MKX's story and the time jumps that will occur throughout. He claimed that gamers will see big shifts in power over the course of the narrative, and that flashbacks and jumps forward of 5 to 10 years will be used. Boon even admitted that once the story of MKX is complete he's not sure where Mortal Kombat will go from there.

The whole interview can be found at IGN.

Mortal Kombat X Revealed, First Appearance at E3 2014

NetherRealm Studios and Warner Brothers Games have released the first trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat X. The video, which shows series mainstays Scorpion and Sub Zero fighting in a snowy forest, unveils a new graphics engine for the series while seemingly showing the return of MK9-style gameplay. X-Rays have returned, and many of the other moves and movements of the characters are indicative of MK9's playstyle.

But the video also shows the two characters interacting with the stage in ways new to Mortal Kombat, slamming into trees and using the environment to hurt one another. While Mortal Kombat 4 first introduced weapons to the series, the MKX trailer points to more Injustice-style stage hazards as the possible direction for the upcoming game.

No other information about MKx is available at this time, but according to WB Games UK, MKX will make its first public appearance at E3 2014, June 10-12. The game will be released for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC. Hit the jump for the trailer.

NetherRealm Studios Relocating Mortal Kombat 9 Online Service From GameSpy Servers

The latest Mortal Kombat will be moving to a new online service as a response to the upcoming closure of servers on GameSpy.

Developer NetherRealm Studios is in the progress of transitioning Mortal Kombat 9 from the GameSpy platform, the game's original multiplayer service. According to the official Mortal Kombat Facebook page, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC MK9 players "may experience an interruption of online play and matchmaking and we ask for your patience during this time." The PlayStation Vita version after May 31, 2014 will only have multiplayer through an ad-hoc network.

This decision came following the announcement on April 2014 in which GameSpy owner Glu Mobile will terminate all legacy servers on May 31, 2014. Publishers and developers also have committed to migrating some of their own games to newer services. Another fighting game that featured the GameSpy platform was the PS3 version Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition; It was later removed in the latest major update.

NetherRealm Reveals "Injustice: Gods Among Us," an all-DC Universe Fighting Game

According to Gamespot, Mortal Kombat developers NetherRealm Studios are working on Injustice: Gods Among Us, an all-new fighting game set in the DC Comics Universe. MK lead Ed Boon is no stranger to the world of Batman and Superman, having released Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in 2008, but this marks the first fighting game dedicated entirely to the DC Comics canon.

The game will likely borrow some gameplay elements from last year's Mortal Kombat reboot, and will feature weapons and destructible environments. Among the confirmed fighters are Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Solomon Grundy, and the Flash. Injustice: Gods Among Us is set for release sometime in 2013.
